Dr. Valeria Senigaglia, the lead author of the study, highlights the unintended consequences of feeding wild dolphins. This practice encourages begging behavior, leading to interactions with vessels and potential injuries or entanglement in fishing gear. Moreover, it can lower the reproductive success and survival rates of offspring, further exacerbating the population decline.

While feeding is a significant factor, it is not the sole contributor to the dolphins' projected decline. The study also considered the impacts of human-linked calf deaths, major oil spills, and outbreaks of morbillivirus, a highly contagious pathogen. Under current conditions, the population is predicted to plummet to just eight individuals within a century.

The research team also explored the potential impact of conservation measures similar to those implemented in Scotland's Moray Firth. By adopting a comprehensive approach, including cutting out food handouts, establishing protective zones, and reducing recreational and industrial water activity, the Moray Firth was able to halve calf mortality and double local dolphin fertility.
